What is the ADI Standards Check?

The Standards Check assesses your ability to teach a real pupil in a live lesson environment. It replaced the old "check test" and is based on the National Standard for Driver and Rider Training. It ensures instructors:

  • Maintain high teaching standards
  • Deliver safe and effective lessons
  • Use modern coaching techniques
  • Continue professional development

How Often is the Standards Check Required?

All ADIs must take a standards check at least once every 4 years. However, the DVSA may require one earlier depending on:

📊

Performance Triggers

Student test pass rates, fault trends, and DVSA monitoring systems.

📋

Complaint Triggers

Any complaints or concerns raised about your teaching standards.

What Happens During the Standards Check?

A 45-minute driving lesson where you teach a real pupil while the examiner sits in the back seat assessing your teaching ability.

1️⃣

Introduction

Set clear lesson objectives and establish what the pupil wants to achieve.

2️⃣

Main Teaching Session

Deliver the lesson with effective coaching, risk management and structure.

3️⃣

Feedback & Reflection

Debrief the pupil and encourage self-reflection at the end of the lesson.

⚠️ This is a real lesson, not a role play. You can use a learner driver or full licence holder — but NOT another ADI or trainee instructor.

How the Standards Check is Marked

Assessed on 17 competencies grouped into 3 categories:

📋 1. Lesson Planning

  • Clear objectives
  • Structured lesson
  • Appropriate level for pupil

⚡ 2. Risk Management

  • Safety awareness
  • Hazard anticipation
  • Timely intervention

⚠️ Poor risk management can result in failure.

🎓 3. Teaching & Learning

  • Communication skills
  • Coaching techniques
  • Pupil involvement

Grading System

31 – 42Grade BPass ✅
0 – 30FailUnsatisfactory ❌

⚠️ What Happens if You Fail?

You are allowed 3 attempts to pass the Standards Check.

Fail all 3 → removed from the ADI register and must retake Part 2 and Part 3 to requalify.

Professional preparation is absolutely essential — don't leave it to chance.

Common Reasons for Failure

❌ What to Avoid

  • Poor risk management
  • Instructor-led teaching (telling, not coaching)
  • Lack of lesson structure
  • Weak communication
  • Over-talking, ignoring pupil input
  • Poor timing and unsafe teaching

✅ What DVSA Looks For

  • Client-centred learning
  • Safe teaching at all times
  • Structured lessons
  • Adaptability to the pupil
  • Professional communication
  • Pupil involvement and reflection

Client-Centred Learning

Modern instruction focuses on asking questions, encouraging independent thinking, and building pupil confidence — not just telling them what to do.

💡 Example

"Do this now" — instructor-led, no pupil thinking
✔️"What do you think is the safest option here?" — coaching approach, pupil-centred

Risk Management – Most Important Area

The most common failure point — even for experienced instructors. You must:

  • Identify risks early and plan ahead
  • Give clear, timely instructions when needed
  • Intervene physically or verbally when safety is at risk
⚠️ Poor risk management can result in an automatic fail — even if the rest of your lesson is excellent.

How to Prepare for the Standards Check

1

Choose the Right Pupil

Pick someone at a suitable level for a structured, meaningful lesson.

2

Plan Your Lesson

Have clear goals, structure, and appropriate topics ready before the test.

3

Practise Coaching Techniques

Encourage pupil involvement, use open questions, and avoid over-instructing.

4

Improve Risk Awareness

Always think ahead — anticipate hazards and intervene at the right moment.

5

Take Mock Tests

Practise under real conditions with professional feedback from us.

Example Lesson Structure — Roundabouts

🎯

Introduction

Set objectives, check pupil knowledge and confidence on roundabouts.

🚗

Guided Practice

Support the pupil through roundabouts with coaching questions.

🛣️

Independent Driving

Let the pupil tackle roundabouts independently with minimal input.

💬

Feedback & Reflection

Debrief — what went well, what to improve, pupil-led reflection.

Tips for Grade A

  • Use open questions throughout
  • Keep lessons pupil-focused
  • Maintain safety — never compromise
  • Give clear, constructive feedback
  • Stay adaptable to your pupil's needs

Reflective Practice

After every lesson, ask yourself:

  • What went well in this lesson?
  • What could be improved?
  • Did the pupil fully understand?
  • Was I coaching or just telling?

After the Standards Check

📄

Standards Check Report

You receive your grade, full score breakdown and examiner feedback after the test.

⚖️

Can You Appeal?

Yes — but only if correct procedures were not followed, not simply because you disagree with the outcome.

💰

Cost of the Check

FREE — fully included in your ADI registration. No extra charge.
