How to Prepare to Pass Your Driving Test First Time

Many learners hope to pass first time. Nobody can guarantee a pass, but good preparation makes it much more likely that you arrive feeling ready. This guide covers the steps that matter most, in order.

Quick answer: pass your theory test, learn with regular lessons, take mock tests, book when you can drive without instruction, and prepare for test day. There is no minimum number of lessons, so go by readiness, not a number.

Theory test

You must pass your theory test before you can book your practical test. It has two parts and you must pass both.

Lessons and practice

GOV.UK says to take your test only when you can do everything without instruction, and that there is no minimum number of lessons. Regular lessons usually work better than long gaps, because skills build on each other.

Mock tests

A mock test in test conditions shows you what the real thing feels like and highlights anything still to work on. Ask your instructor about one when you are close to ready.

Booking

Book through GOV.UK only. You can check the current fee on the GOV.UK driving test cost page. For the latest rules, read 2026 driving test booking rules.

Test day

The test lasts around 35 minutes and is the same in a manual and an automatic car. Bring what you need, arrive in good time and drive as you have practised. See driving test tips and show me, tell me questions.

Instructor tip: if you are nervous, say so. Staying calm is a skill you can practise, and your instructor can help.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be certain of passing first time?

No one can be. A pass depends on your driving on the day. Good preparation gives you the best chance.

How many lessons will I need?

It varies. Your instructor can advise as you progress.
