The final of three qualifying tests.
The ADI Part 3 test assesses your ability to teach, not just to drive. A DVSA examiner observes you giving a lesson to one of your own pupils and assesses how well you plan it, manage risk and help your pupil learn. It is the last of the three qualifying tests, and you can book it once you have passed the ADI Part 2 driving test (after the Part 1 theory test).
The examiner looks at three areas:
Seventeen areas of competence, one lesson.
The DVSA assesses 17 areas of competence in these three categories, each scored from 0 to 3, out of 51 in total. According to GOV.UK, 31–42 is Grade B and 43–51 is Grade A (both allow you to join the ADI register), while 30 or below is a fail. You also fail with a score of 7 or less in risk management, or if the examiner stops the lesson for safety reasons. Always check GOV.UK for the current details.
Lesson planning
Planning the lesson around your pupil's goals and needs.
Risk management
Managing risk throughout the lesson. A score of 7 or less in this category is an automatic fail.
Teaching and learning
Using suitable teaching and learning strategies to help your pupil progress.
Your own pupil
The lesson is with one of your own pupils, and the examiner assesses how you teach them.
What the test involves.
The examiner observes a lesson of about 45 minutes with one of your own pupils. You discuss the pupil's goals and risk management at the start, and the pupil reflects on the lesson at the end. According to GOV.UK, you cannot spend the whole lesson teaching a single manoeuvre.
