What is the theory test?

Two parts, one sitting.

The car theory test is set by the DVSA and taken in two parts, back to back, at an official test centre. You must pass it before you can book your practical driving test.

How the test is structured.

What's covered

The 14 theory test topics.

In detail

Hazard perception.

Often the part learners find hardest — timing and genuine awareness matter more than memorising answers.

14 video clips, each showing everyday driving situations One clip contains two developing hazards — stay alert throughout Up to 5 points per hazard — the earlier you spot it developing, the higher you score You get a practice clip before the real clips begin, so you know what to expect

Don't click randomly

Clicking constantly or in a set pattern rather than in response to genuine hazards is treated as an invalid response and can score zero for that clip. Watch properly and click when you actually see something developing.

Why learners struggle

Common reasons people don't pass.

Most issues come down to preparation, not ability.

Not enough practice under timed, realistic conditions Poor hazard perception timing — clicking too early or too late Gaps in road sign or Highway Code knowledge Only ever revising one topic area and neglecting the rest

Our sessions target exactly these areas — structured revision across all 14 topics, and genuine hazard perception practice, not just memorising answers.
