What are refresher driving lessons?
Refresher driving lessons are one-to-one lessons for people who already hold a full driving licence and want to feel safe, capable and comfortable behind the wheel again. They are built around the driver you are today, not around a syllabus written for someone who has never driven.
Beginner lessons start from the very beginning: the controls, moving off, the basic rules of the road and, eventually, a route towards a driving test. Refresher lessons start from wherever you are now. You may already know how to drive but be out of practice, unsure on busy roads, nervous about a particular situation, or getting used to a different kind of car. Each lesson focuses on the skills, situations and worries that matter most to you.
Every lesson is taught in an automatic car, so there is no clutch and no gear changing. That leaves more of your attention for what really matters: observation, mirrors, hazards, road position and the traffic around you. Refresher lessons aren’t a test, and nobody is judging you — the aim is simply to help you get back to driving safely and comfortably.
If you would like to talk it through first, you can send us an enquiry or give us a call.
Who are refresher driving lessons for?
There is no single type of refresher driver. People come to us for many different reasons, and the right lesson plan looks different for each of them. Here are some of the most common situations. None of them means you need a particular number of lessons.
Not driven for a few months
Even a short break can leave you feeling rusty. Refresher lessons help you get your road sense, smoothness and judgement back at a pace that suits you.
Not driven for several years
Roads, layouts, signs and cars all change. We help you get used to modern traffic and rebuild good habits step by step.
Not driven for 5, 10 or more years
A long break is more common than you might think. We start gently, work out where you are and build up to the roads you want to use — with no rush and no pressure.
Nervous or anxious drivers
Calm, patient teaching in a relaxed environment, beginning with what feels manageable and building from there.
Drivers who have lost confidence
Confidence can drop after a bad experience, a near miss or simply time away. We work on the particular moments that worry you.
Returning after an accident
If an accident has shaken your confidence, we can move at a pace you are comfortable with and build up gradually to the situations you find hardest.
Passed, but rarely drove
Plenty of people pass their test and then never drive regularly. Refresher lessons help turn a licence into real, everyday driving.
Recently moved to the UK
Learning the rules, road layouts and local driving habits in a new country can take time. We help you settle into driving where you now live.
International drivers adapting to UK roads
Driving on the left, UK road signs, priority rules, roundabouts and narrow, parked-up streets can all feel very different from what you are used to.
Returning to driving after having children
A new stage of life often brings new driving needs, from school runs to appointments. Refresher lessons can help parents regain independence.
Starting to drive for work
If a new job needs you behind the wheel, we can help you get comfortable with the kind of driving you will actually be doing.
Changed circumstances
A move, a new job, fewer transport options or a change in family life can suddenly make driving a priority again.
Moving from manual to automatic
An automatic car feels different from a manual one. We help you adjust to driving without a clutch or gears, and to the way automatics behave.
New automatic, hybrid or electric car
Whether you have just bought one or are about to, we can help you get used to how it drives and to features such as parking sensors and cameras.
Improving particular skills
You may be a confident driver who simply wants to be better at parking, roundabouts, motorways or night driving. You decide what to work on.
Why drivers choose refresher lessons
Most people who contact us are not looking to start from scratch. They are looking to feel safe, capable and in control again. Common reasons include:
Rebuild confidence
Many returning drivers feel uneasy about traffic, busy roads and roundabouts. Steady practice with a patient instructor helps you feel more at ease at the wheel.
Correct bad habits
Habits creep in over the years: rushed mirror checks, missed blind spots, weak road positioning and other things that can become unsafe without you noticing.
Update your knowledge
The Highway Code, road signs and road layouts change over time. Lessons are a chance to refresh what you know, including how smart motorways work, and ask questions.
Learn modern cars
Today’s cars have features that may be new to you: automatic transmission, parking sensors and cameras, and hybrid or electric systems.
Rebuilding your driving confidence, one step at a time
Confidence does not come back overnight, and it should not be forced. We rebuild it gradually, starting with what feels comfortable and increasing the challenge only when you are ready. Your lessons are personalised to your current ability and confidence, and adjusted as you progress. We cannot promise a particular outcome, but we can offer patient, honest, one-to-one support.
Getting comfortable with the car
We begin with the basics of the vehicle: seating position, mirrors, controls and how an automatic car behaves when you ease off the brake. Understanding the car takes away a lot of uncertainty.
Moving off and stopping smoothly
Smooth, controlled moving off, steering and braking are the foundation for everything else. We take time to get them feeling natural again.
Quieter roads first, where appropriate
Starting somewhere calm lets you focus on observation, steering and control without heavy traffic adding pressure. If you would rather start somewhere busier, we can discuss that too.
Junctions and roundabouts
We look at how to approach, observe, judge gaps and position yourself, so that junctions and roundabouts stop feeling like guesswork.
Lane discipline, mirrors and road positioning
Choosing the right lane, checking mirrors at the right moments and positioning the car well all make driving safer and calmer.
Traffic awareness
We practise reading what other road users are doing, including buses, cyclists, pedestrians and drivers behind you, and planning ahead rather than reacting late.
Busier roads and complex junctions
When you are ready, we move on to heavier traffic, multi-lane roads and trickier junctions, always with an instructor beside you.
Parking
Parking worries many returning drivers. We practise the parking and reversing situations you find hardest, in real conditions.
Dual carriageways and motorways, where appropriate
Faster roads are introduced when you feel ready, starting with the skills that make them manageable: observation, speed judgement and lane discipline.
Building independence
The goal is that you can make your own journeys safely. We work towards planning routes, making decisions on your own and driving where you need to go.
You set the pace. Some drivers move through these stages quickly, while others spend longer on one of them. Both are completely normal, and your plan can change at any time.
What we can help you with
You choose what to work on, and we will suggest priorities after your first assessment. These are common areas for refresher drivers. Only the ones that matter to you will be part of your lessons.
Parking and manoeuvres
Parallel parking, bay parking and reversing, practised in real conditions. We work on observation, control and judging space until you feel in charge of the car.
Roundabouts
Lane choice, signalling, giving way and confidence on busy and multi-lane roundabouts, as well as mini roundabouts.
Junctions
T-junctions, crossroads, traffic lights and filters. We focus on observation, positioning and judging safe gaps.
Busy urban driving
Busy junctions, bus lanes, one-way streets, parked cars, pedestrians and cyclists. This is the kind of city driving many returning drivers find the most demanding.
Lane discipline and road positioning
Choosing the right lane early, holding a steady position and moving over safely when roads narrow or lanes change.
Mirror use and observation
Good mirror habits, blind-spot checks and all-round awareness, so that you always know what is around you.
Speed control
Matching your speed to the road, the traffic and the conditions, and staying smooth rather than hesitant or rushed.
Following distances
Judging a safe gap to the vehicle in front in different conditions, and what to do when someone is following too closely behind you.
Hazard awareness
Spotting and anticipating developing hazards early, planning ahead and driving defensively.
Dual carriageways
Joining, overtaking where appropriate, lane discipline and keeping a steady speed on faster two-lane roads.
Motorway driving
Where appropriate and when you feel ready: joining and leaving, lane discipline, safe distances and how smart motorways work.
Night driving lessons
We offer night driving lessons covering headlight use, reduced visibility, glare and judging distance in the dark.
Driving in unfamiliar areas
Using signs and lane markings, following directions and staying calm when you do not know the road.
Driving in heavy traffic
Staying patient and smooth in queues, stop-start traffic and busy rush-hour roads.
Driving independently
Planning a journey, following a sat nav safely and making your own decisions, so you can drive without someone beside you.
Confidence around other road users
Buses, lorries, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. We help you understand how they behave and how to share the road with them calmly.
Modern automatic vehicles
How automatic cars move off and creep, how to brake smoothly and how to use features such as parking sensors and reversing cameras.
Hybrid and electric familiarisation
General help getting used to a hybrid or electric car, so that you feel comfortable with the way it drives.
Refresher lessons for automatic drivers
Moving from a manual car to an automatic, or buying a new automatic, hybrid or electric car, is a common reason to book refresher lessons.
If you passed your test in a manual car, your licence also lets you drive an automatic. Even so, the first few journeys can feel strange. There is no clutch, no gear lever to think about and no stalling, but an automatic car moves forward on its own when you release the brake, and it can feel very different on hills, in queues and when parking.
We help you get used to these differences in a calm, supported way. You can read more about our automatic driving lessons in Brighton & Hove, and if you are working towards an extra qualification after passing your test, our Pass Plus course is a separate option.
What changes in an automatic
- No clutch pedal and no gear changes
- The car creeps forward when you release the brake
- Smooth, light braking matters more
- More attention available for the road around you
- Parking sensors and cameras are common features
- General help for hybrid and electric cars too
Refresher lessons around Brighton & Hove
Driving in Brighton & Hove asks a lot of a returning driver. Your lessons can include the roads you actually use.
The seafront and city-centre roads are busy, with buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians sharing narrow streets, bus lanes and one-way systems. Brighton is also a hilly city, and many roads in areas such as Kemptown, Whitehawk, Woodingdean, Coldean and Withdean have steep sections, so moving off on a slope and parking on a gradient are worth practising. Residential streets in Hove, Portslade and Southwick often have tight parking and narrow gaps between parked cars.
Larger roads bring a different set of challenges: the A23 London Road through Patcham, the A27 near Falmer and the A259 coast road through Ovingdean, Hove, Portslade, Shoreham-by-Sea and Lancing. Busy destinations such as Brighton Marina add large car parks, retail traffic and parking bays to the mix.
Lessons can cover whichever of these you really need to drive on. If there is a particular roundabout, hill, car park or route to work that worries you, tell us and we will build it into your plan. You can also see how our automatic driving lessons in Brighton & Hove work for other learners, or check our prices.

Refresher driving lessons in Burgess Hill
Lessons are also available in Burgess Hill, Hassocks, Haywards Heath and the surrounding area, with the same one-to-one approach.
Burgess Hill can be a good place to rebuild confidence. Quieter residential streets give you room to settle in, while the town centre, local roundabouts and main roads such as the A273 give you realistic practice when you are ready for it. From there, routes towards Hassocks and Haywards Heath let you build up to faster roads at your own pace.
Automatic refresher lessons in Burgess Hill
All lessons are in an automatic car, whether you are an experienced driver who has not driven for a while, a nervous driver or someone returning after a long break. If you are preparing for a practical test, we can use practice routes in the area around the Burgess Hill test centre. These are sample practice routes only and are not official DVSA test routes. Our guide to show me, tell me questions is a useful starting point for the vehicle safety questions.

How refresher lessons work
A simple, flexible process designed around you. There is no fixed number of lessons and no fixed plan.
Initial conversation
We start with a chat, by phone or through the enquiry form, about what you are looking for and when you would like to start.
Understanding your experience and concerns
We ask when you last drove, what you have driven, what has changed and what worries you most. There are no wrong answers.
Initial driving assessment
In your first lesson we see how you drive today, in a relaxed way, so that we can plan around real information rather than guesses.
Strengths and areas to improve
We tell you honestly what is going well and what to work on, and we check that it matches what you want to achieve.
A personalised lesson plan
Your plan reflects your confidence, your goals and the roads you need to drive. You can change it at any time.
Building confidence gradually
We begin with what feels manageable and increase the challenge when you are ready, never before.
Real-world driving practice
As you progress, we practise real situations such as junctions, roundabouts, busy roads and parking, with full instructor support.
Increasing your independence
We help you plan journeys, make your own decisions and drive the routes that matter to you.
Reviewing your progress
Along the way, we look back at what has improved and what still needs attention, so you always know where you stand.
Continuing only where useful
You decide whether to continue. We would rather you book what helps than book more than you need.
How many refresher lessons do I need?
There is no universal answer, and we would never suggest a number just to fill a diary. The right amount of tuition varies a great deal from one driver to the next.
An initial assessment is the best way to find out. After watching you drive and talking through your goals, we can tell you honestly what support seems appropriate, whether that is a single lesson to check your skills or a series of lessons while you rebuild confidence. We cannot promise that you will feel confident after a certain number of lessons, and we will not pretend otherwise.
If you are unsure, get in touch and we will talk it through with you.
What affects it
- How long it has been since you last drove
- Your previous driving experience
- How confident you feel right now
- Your current driving ability
- The type of driving you want to do
- How often you will need to drive
- Which areas you most want to improve

Refresher driving lessons: your questions answered
Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, just ask.
What are refresher driving lessons?
They are one-to-one lessons for people who already hold a full driving licence and want to rebuild confidence or sharpen their skills. Instead of starting from the beginning, we start from where you are now and work on the areas that matter most to you.
Who should take refresher driving lessons?
Anyone who feels unsure behind the wheel. That could be a driver who has had a break, someone who is nervous, a driver new to UK roads or a confident driver who wants to improve a particular skill. You do not need to be anxious or have had a long break to benefit.
Can I have refresher lessons if I have not driven for years?
Yes. People return to driving after gaps of five, ten or more years, and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. We start with a conversation and a relaxed assessment, then build up gradually. There is no judgement, and the length of your break does not matter.
Can refresher lessons help nervous drivers?
Yes. Lessons are calm, patient and one-to-one, and we start with what feels manageable. We work on the situations that worry you specifically. We cannot promise a particular result, but steady, supported practice can make a real difference to how you feel behind the wheel.
Can I take refresher lessons in an automatic car?
Yes. All our lessons are taught in an automatic car. If you passed your test in a manual car, your licence also lets you drive an automatic, so refresher lessons can help you get used to the difference.
Can I practise motorway driving?
Yes, where appropriate and when you feel ready. We usually build up to it by working on lane discipline, observation and speed judgement, perhaps on dual carriageways first. You need to hold a full licence, and we will not rush you onto faster roads.
Can I practise parking?
Yes. Parallel parking, bay parking and reversing are all common areas to work on. We practise them in real conditions, with plenty of time to repeat what you find difficult.
Can I practise driving in Brighton and Hove?
Yes. Lessons can cover busy city streets, bus lanes, one-way systems, hills, tight residential parking and faster roads. Tell us which parts of Brighton or Hove you drive in and we will include them.
Can I have refresher lessons in Burgess Hill?
Yes. We offer automatic refresher lessons in Burgess Hill, and we can also help in nearby areas such as Hassocks and Haywards Heath. Contact us to talk through your location.
How many refresher lessons will I need?
It varies from driver to driver. It depends on how long you have been away from driving, your confidence and what you want to achieve. An initial assessment is the best way to see what support is suitable. See the section on how many lessons you need above.
Can I choose what I want to practise?
Yes. It is your lesson, so you decide what to work on, whether that is roundabouts, parking, busy roads or the route to work. After your assessment we may suggest priorities, but you remain in control.
Can I take a single refresher lesson?
Yes. A single one-hour lesson is available at £40, which can be a good way to check your skills or try the experience. You can also book longer sessions or several lessons, but that is entirely your choice.
Can I take two-hour refresher lessons?
Yes. Two hours cost £75, which saves £5 compared with two single hours. A longer lesson gives you time to settle in, drive further and cover more situations.
Do you offer night driving lessons?
Yes. We offer night driving lessons for drivers who want to feel more comfortable after dark. We cover headlight use, reduced visibility, glare from oncoming traffic and judging distance and speed in the dark. Get in touch to talk about lesson times.
Can I practise driving to work or other regular destinations?
Yes. If you have a regular route, such as your commute, the school run or a visit to family, tell us. We can include the roads, junctions and parking you will really meet, as far as lesson times allow.
Can you help me get used to a new automatic, hybrid or electric car?
Yes. We can cover how automatic cars behave, smooth braking and driver aids such as parking sensors and cameras. For hybrid and electric cars we can give general help getting used to them.
Are refresher lessons suitable for experienced drivers?
Yes. Many experienced drivers have picked up habits over the years, and a fresh pair of eyes can help you spot and correct them. Refresher lessons are also useful if you are switching to an automatic or driving in a new area.
Can I have lessons after an accident or a period away from driving?
Yes. We can move at a pace you are comfortable with and build up gradually. If you have any medical concerns about driving, speak to your doctor and check the DVLA’s guidance, as we are driving instructors rather than medical professionals.
How much do refresher lessons cost?
Refresher lessons are £40 per hour, or 2 hours for £75. See our pricing page for full details.
What do I need to bring to a refresher lesson?
Please bring your valid driving licence. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to drive, bring them too. If you have specific questions beforehand, send us an enquiry.
