What is ADI Part 2?

The second of three qualifying tests.

The ADI Part 2 test is the second of the three tests you must pass to become a DVSA-approved driving instructor — after the Part 1 theory test and before the Part 3 instructional ability test. It's a test of your driving ability, assessed to a much higher standard than a standard learner driving test.

To pass, GOV.UK requires that you can:

Drive safely in different road and traffic conditions Show that you know the Highway Code by the way you drive Meet the national standard for driving cars Do everything on the day without instruction
What the test includes

Five stages, one hour.

Every ADI Part 2 test follows the same official structure, set by the DVSA.

01

Eyesight check

Read a number plate from the required distance before driving begins.

02

Show me, tell me

5 vehicle-safety questions testing your knowledge of basic maintenance.

03

General driving ability

A sustained, high standard of driving across varied road and traffic conditions.

04

Manoeuvres

Two reversing exercises, chosen by the examiner from four options.

05

Independent driving

Around 20 minutes driving independently, by sat nav or road signs.

~1hr

Total duration

The full test takes around one hour, start to finish.

In detail

Eyesight & show me, tell me.

Two of the five stages happen before — and right at the start of — your drive.

Eyesight check

27mNew-style number plate (2 letters + 2 numbers, e.g. AB51 ABC)
27.5mOlder-style number plate
1stHappens before driving begins
= failNot passing ends the test — and counts as one attempt

'Show me, tell me' questions

3 'Tell me' questions Asked at the start of the test, before you start driving — testing your knowledge of basic vehicle safety.
2 'Show me' questions Asked while you're driving — for example, showing how to wash the windscreen using the car's controls and wipers.

What happens if an answer is wrong

Each incorrect answer counts as a driving fault. Getting all 5 questions wrong, or losing control of the car while answering a 'show me' question, results in a serious fault and failure of the test.

In detail

General driving & manoeuvres.

The largest part of the test — sustained driving, plus two reversing exercises.

You'll need to show

Expert handling of the controls Correct use of road procedure Anticipating other road users and reacting appropriately Sound judgement of distance, speed and timing Consideration for other road users Environmentally-friendly driving Varied conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways where possible — and possibly an emergency stop

Reversing — 2 of these 4

Parallel park at the side of the road Reverse into a parking bay and drive out Drive into a parking bay and reverse out Pull up on the right, reverse ~2 car lengths, rejoin traffic safely
In detail

Independent driving.

You'll drive for around 20 minutes by following either a sat nav or traffic signs — the examiner tells you which.

Sat nav The examiner provides and sets up the sat nav. You cannot follow directions from your own device.
Road signs You follow directional traffic signs to navigate independently instead.
A wrong turning won't affect your result unless you make a fault while doing it — the examiner will help you back onto the route If a sign is hidden from view, the examiner will give directions until the next one is visible
Faults & test result

Mistakes, the pass mark & attempts.

Understanding how the test is marked takes the fear out of a single small mistake.

A mistake doesn't automatically mean you'll fail

You can carry on if you make a mistake — it may not affect your result if it isn't serious. Your examiner will only stop the test if they believe your driving is a danger to other road users. To pass, you need no more than 6 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

Only 3 attempts are allowed

If you don't pass within three attempts, you'll need to wait two years from the date you passed ADI Part 1 before you can start the whole process again — including retaking Part 1. Thorough preparation matters.

Our training

What our ADI Part 2 training covers.

Training is tailored to your current ability — we focus on every area the examiner assesses.

Advanced observation

Mirror checks at the right time, awareness of your surroundings, and anticipating hazards early.

Road positioning

Correct lane discipline, safe positioning at junctions, and proper use of road space.

Speed & control

Appropriate speed for conditions, smooth acceleration and braking, full vehicle control.

Manoeuvres

Parallel parking, bay parking forward and reverse, pulling up on the right, controlled reversing.

Independent driving

Following a sat nav or road signs while making safe, independent decisions.

Instructor standard

Professional-level driving, planning ahead, and calm, confident control throughout.

Common faults

Faults we help you fix.

Many candidates fail due to small but important mistakes. Training focuses on the faults that come up most often.

Late mirror checks Poor junction observations Incorrect road positioning Hesitation or poor decision-making Lack of planning ahead Driving that isn't smooth or progressive
Final preparation

Mock test & final assessment.

One of the most effective ways to prepare is a mock ADI Part 2 test under real conditions.

Mock test session Experience the test environment, identify mistakes, and build confidence under real conditions.
Final assessment If your test is very close, get an honest driving assessment to confirm you're fully ready.

Even one or two lessons can make a big difference. Don't underestimate the value of professional, honest feedback.
