More learners are choosing to learn in an automatic car. If you are looking for an automatic driving school in Burgess Hill, this page explains what is different, who it suits and what to check first.
Quick answer: automatic lessons remove the clutch and gear changes, so you can focus on road awareness. The driving test is the same as in a manual car, and a pass gives you a licence for automatic cars only.
What changes in an automatic
- No clutch control or gear changes
- No stalling at junctions or on hills
- More attention available for observation, hazards and planning
You still learn the same road skills, and the same standards apply on test. Compare the options in top benefits of learning to drive automatic.
Who it suits
- Nervous drivers who want to build confidence gradually
- Busy people who want focused, efficient lessons
- Returning drivers refreshing their skills, see refresher driving lessons
- Anyone who simply prefers a simpler way to drive
What to check
Make sure your instructor holds a green ADI badge (or a pink trainee badge) and ask about lesson length, areas covered and cancellation terms. Remember that a licence from an automatic pass only covers automatic cars. See GOV.UK licence categories.
Instructor tip: if you think you may want to drive a manual car in future, think about this before you choose, as it affects which test you take.
